Solo Task - Deanna Hammond-Blackburn 9164
'Sigh
No More' is the debut album of the English indie folk quartet Mumford
& Sons, released in October 2009. Although this cover follows the
convention of featuring the band on the cover, it is done in an
unusual way. The band are shown in a shop window; although they are
the focus of the cover they aren't showing themselves with voyeurism
or overstating themselves in a vain way.
The
image has multiple connotations; an obvious connotation is that they
are trying to sell themselves and their music. The colours used also
give different representations; the white shop front has connotations
of purity and innocence, while the black interior of the shop
contrasts against the exterior with connotations of shadows, evil and
darkness. This contrast gives the impression that the band could be
trying to emerge from the darkness of the past and into the light
that their music brings. I like this use of using the colours as
representations and I feel this would be a good idea to use in our
ancillary products, especially as this is something we also used in
our music video. The colours also link to the name of the album 'Sigh
No More' as this suggests they aren't going to be as depressed or
sorrowful any more.
The
typography is interesting while also conforming to conventions; the
name of the band is bigger than the name of the album and is in
italics which draws the audience's eye. This is a good convention to
follow as the name of the band is the one of the key selling points
for the album. The font is also appealing as it helps to imply the
indie genre with it being elegant and not overly ostentatious or
bright. We need to use simple yet sophisticated typography on our
album cover in order to help portray the genre further.
